Effects of Lifestyle Factors on Parkinson¡¯s Disease
Yoon Seo-Yeon

Abstract
Parkinson¡¯s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease characterized by cardinal motor symptoms such as rest tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. Although the etiology of PD still remains uncertain, multifactorial origins, including both genetic and environmental factors, have been suggested to be related to PD. Lifestyle factors including physical activity, alcohol and caffeine consumption, and smoking habit are important in that they are modifiable and can affect PD onset and progression. This review provides an overview of the effects of lifestyle factors on PD risk and progression. Smoking showed a dose-response inverse association with PD development. Physical activity and caffeine consumption have protective effects on PD risk and progression, whereas alcohol consumption is related to a decreased rate of PD with some controversy. Multiple lifestyle factors potentially modify the rate of onset and symptom progression among PD patients. Identifying factors that prevent or slow progression may add to our understanding of neuroprotective mechanisms of PD and ultimately help to set the treatment strategy.
